Figure -1 Job Rotation
Job rotation is a management method that involves shifting employees from one job to another in order to familiarize them with all aspects of an organization. Job rotation is intended to improve employees' work experience, cross-train them, and increase their job happiness.
Employees are shifted between two or more tasks or
positions at regular intervals in order to expose them to all verticals of a
business, which is known as job rotation. It is a method of testing an
employee's skills and competences in order to place him or her in the
appropriate position.
Internal job rotation is seen by employees as a way to
increase their knowledge and skills (Campion et al., 1994).
According to Koontz
& Mills, (1984) Job rotation is the most effective sort of training for
familiarizing employees with the details of the various positions that may be
offered to them.
Effective
Job Rotation Steps,
1. Job rotation should begin with the
end in mind.
The job changes are determined by the purpose of work
rotation. If the goal is to have a department where every employee is cross-trained
to do every task, the rotation must be carefully structured. Job rotation plans
will differ if the goal is to develop individual employees for eventual
promotion, to advance the employees' career options, to avoid job boredom, or
to create backup help for vacation times. Effective job rotation establishes a
starting point.
2. Job
rotation needs to be properly arranged.
An effective training program allows the employee to build on the abilities acquired at each stage of the job rotation. As a result, the plan entails the employee performing a set of tasks along a path that other employees have taken, resulting in a fully trained employee or the achievement of the goal. Your work rotation plan's effectiveness must be examined on a regular basis to ensure that the optimal job rotation strategy is in place.
3. Employees
must be able to judge whether the job rotation is meeting their goals.
As a result, job rotation steps should be measurable and build on one another. Only measurable goals at each job rotation will help the employee recognize that their employer is concerned about their career and professional growth. This has a big impact on whether or not you keep your personnel.
4. Both
the employee and the organization need to benefit from job rotation.
Teaching employees new job abilities on a regular basis takes effort and drains organizational strength. Job rotation will not work or encourage employees if they see no benefit after putting forth the effort required to master new jobs.
5. A
mentor, trainer/ supervisor is provided at each step of the job rotation plan.
When a person starts a new position, he or she is assigned to another employee who will instruct, answer questions, and mentor them during the training. This allows an organization to reinforce training throughout the process. It also allows businesses to ensure that their personnel are properly trained. This is due to the fact that individuals who can effectively teach others incorporate their own knowledge and abilities.
6. Employee
learning is aided by written documentation, an employee manual, or an online
resource.
In order to decrease the employee learning curve, written
documentation regarding various parts of each job is helpful in job rotation.
Employees on the job can create this documentation, which reinforces their own
expertise and systematizes ways(Heathfield, Susan M, 2020) .
Advantages of Job rotations,
1. Rotation
deepens skills,
Job rotation allows the organization to have more depth in various areas. The organization ensures that more personnel learn abilities in each functional area by moving them around. If an employee needs to take a leave of absence, go on vacation, or take a day off, it's a good idea to have several suitable replacements on hand.
2. No
more stuck in a rut
Employees can move around and avoid becoming stuck in
one position with job rotation in place. Employees gain greater skills in a
larger range of professions throughout time. This ensures employment security
and prepares them for better advancement chances. All of these benefits, as
well as improved general development, increase the value of employees to their
employers.
Disadvantages of Job rotations,
1. Employee may resist,
Employees can occasionally be resistant to job rotation in specific instances. Employees who are accustomed to their current roles are typically hesitant to rotate into new positions since it takes them to leave their comfort zones. Employees who rely on teamwork in their everyday work struggle to let go of their social groups, while those with specialized skill sets struggle to relinquish their "guru" role to newcomers.
2. Training
requirements,
A job rotation approach has a price tag. When you move people into numerous positions, you must spend time and money training them in all of them. This includes not just the price of the rotating staff, but also the time spent by managers and others training the employees in each sector. A related worry is that, regardless of the quality of the training program, certain individuals aren't excellent matches for particular roles inside the organization.
3. Productivity
Problems,
In two separate
roles, a company can incur a loss of production when a person learns the ropes
of a new position. A seasoned, competent employee will leave one job for
another that has a different skill set and new daily duties. Productivity and
work product diminish during the acclimatization period. The impact is
amplified if the employee's previous function is simultaneously reallocated to
a less-experienced worker
