A staff promotion occurs when an existing employee is recruited into a position that is 'up the ladder' from his or her previous position. A promotion like this usually comes with new responsibilities, new expectations, and, in many cases, more authority and pay.

The term promotion denotes progression, progress, and achieving higher recognition and status in his field of expertise (Adeboye & Adegoroye, 2012; Mogaji, 1998).

Employee morale is boosted, and they are more motivated to perform better. Promotion prospects provide employees optimism and faith in their careers at work, motivating them to improve their work performance and other organizationally accepted behaviors (Chukwu, 2017; Kim, 2012).

Staff promotion Is important as, it is benefitting to both the company and the employees. Employees are rewarded for their efforts, and corporations frequently improve the quality and capabilities of their workforce (Indeed, 2021).

Types of Staff Performance

1.         Horizontal Performance,

When you give an employee more benefits without changing their responsibilities too much, you're giving them a raise. Making a regular employee a "subject-matter expert," for example, would recognize their greater capacity to execute when compared to their peers with a compensation rise but not dramatically changing their responsibilities.

 

2.         Vertical Promotion,

Everyone has been used to the typical promotion. Vertical promotion entails affecting an employee's responsibilities and rewards as well as their position within the company's structure. A vertical promotion would be a rank-and-file employee becoming a manager.

 

3.         Dry Promotion,

This is the promotion that has the most negative reputation. A "dry" promotion is one in which an employee's duties and responsibilities have increased without their perks being improved.

 

4.         Open/ Closed Promotions,

These two terms relate to the position's eligibility requirements. An open promotion is one in which applying for the position is free and available to all employees at your organization, whereas a closed promotion accepts just a limited group of employees (Ford, 2021).

 

Staff promotion involve some combinations of,

*          Higher salary.

*          More senior job title.

*          Higher level of Job responsibilities.

*          Decision making power.

*          New Leadership responsibilities.

 

Benefits of Staff Promotions

1.         Motivating other employees-

Promotions are usually visible to other employees in the organization, they can serve as a model for the actions, behaviors, and values you want to encourage as an employer.

 

2.         Showing that you appreciate and reward work-

Employees will go the extra mile in their daily work if you consistently show them that you notice, value, and reward their efforts. As a result, morale, engagement, and company loyalty improve.

 

3.         Can reduce hiring cost-

Particularly those related to the appointment of more senior staff. Instead, promotions allow you to groom your people to become leaders. Hiring a new employee is typically 20% more expensive than promoting someone, therefore this is a significant cost savings for businesses.

 

4.         Can reduce employee turnover -       

It's common knowledge that hard work and dedication to the organization will result in advancement and increased pay at some point. When employees discover they won't be promoted, they often look for better pastures.

 

5.         Value and career growth-

At their basis, promotions are a next step in an employee's career. Employee turnover is largely caused by a lack of career advancement; thus, promotions are a key strategy for keeping your best employees(Mcconnell, Brendan, 2021).

Staff promotion is an important tool to encourage employees to increase bond with employer. Staff performance will change the organizational structure and fulfill required vacant positions for smooth operations.   4. Present employees are not accepting just monthly salary from their job. Now their expectations are expanding to professional growth as well as personal growth. According to Jyoti Barman (2021), promotions are very important to employees in many aspects. Promotions are directly affecting to professional and personal growth. However, it is important to have clear transaction regarding the promotions where cannot be challenged back.

  6. The hardwork for every employee counts thus promotion has to be considered. And this needs to be fair to all, not only because of special reason like favoritism or because of a favor but it has to be observed to a right employee who deserves it.
